Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team

Sri ChinmoySri Chinmoy (1931-2007), dedicated his life to fostering peace, starting in the heart of each individual. He felt that peace could be manifested through silent meditation, music, poetry, art, and sports and in 1977 formed the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team to offer running races to the public—for dynamism, energy and joy, as well as fitness and health.
Sri Chinmoy felt that running provided an excellent opportunity for people to challenge themselves and overcome their pre-conceived limitations – what he referred to as self-transcendence.
The idea of self-transcendence is a cornerstone of Sri Chinmoy’s philosophy. In his own words:

“Self-transcendence gives us joy in boundless measure. When we transcend ourselves, we do not compete with others. We do not compete with the rest of the world, but at every moment we compete with ourselves.”

The Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team has expanded worldwide and many countries schedule running events, long-distance swimming races, bicycle races, duathlons, triathlons, marathons and ultras of various distances including the Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race, the world’s longest annual footrace.

Here in Bristol the SCMT has been holding running events for over 30 years, with the first race taking place in 1988. There is an annual summer series of 2 mile races at Eastville Park on the Peace Mile, a measured loop of the park dedicated to Peace.  Previous years saw the Somerset Sprint Triathlon, Sri Chinmoy Tri Club’s GO TRI Swim-Run at Filton, a Duathlon (Bike & Run) and, this year, a Try-a-Tri at Tockington.
